After Rosemary Pennington earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University in 2001, she spent six years working full time as a broadcast journalist in radio and TV newsrooms. Pennington’s experience varies from interning at CNN in London, to becoming managing editor at WOUB, the radio and TV newsroom in Athens, Ohio, to working with WBHM public radio in Birmingham, Alabama as the afternoon host and news producer.

In 2007 she went back to school to earn her Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University, where she taught journalism classes and became involved in a project called Muslim Voices – dedicated to helping non-Muslims better understand Muslim lives. Since its launch Muslim Voices has become an open place of discussion for people all across the world, and has garnered a large Twitter following. Pennington’s involvement as manager of Muslim Voices goes hand in hand with her research, which examines the representation of minorities in media, including Muslim representations in American popular media.

She has also completed multiple fellowships in Germany, twice with the Rias Berlin Commission and once with the American Council on Germany. As an assistant professor, Pennington teaches introductory journalism courses as well as reporting and news writing. In the spring of 2016, she will teach an advanced reporting class, Sex in the News. The class will be informed by her past experience as a medical and science beat reporter.
