The Center for the Study of Global Change, in collaboration with the Indiana University Archives, is pleased to announce the creation of the Global and International Education Archive (GIEA) in spring 2008, to preserve and make available to scholars and the public this important body of educational material. The first two collections, currently being catalogued and archived, are from The American Forum for Global Education and from the Council of Chief State School Officers.

We seek related collections from both individuals and organizations. All materials will be made available at Indiana University Bloomington, in the Archives Reading Room of the Wells Library, with 24 hours notice. As time and copyright permit, many of the items in this archive will be digitally accessible on the Global Center Web site.

The Global Center and the IU Archives would like to recognize the important roles of Andrew Smith, President of The American Forum for Global Education, and Fred Czarra, immediate past Director of International Education, Council of Chief State School Officers, in the establishment of this archive. In addition, we would like to thank the staff of the Center for Social Studies and International Education (formerly the Social Studies Development Center), of the Indiana University School of Education, for their support and use of their facilities in the initial stages of this archive.

If you have questions or comments, please contact us.

Purpose of the Archive

Mission Statement

The mission of the Global and International Education Archive (GIEA) is to collect global and international education materials of all kinds from many sources around the world, to preserve them, and to make them available physically and digitally to everyone.

Rationale

"Global education" or "international education" organizations and materials have existed around the world for nearly half a century, beginning in the 1960s. They focus on educating young people how to understand, live effectively in, and contribute to the modern, complex, interconnected world, not on a comparison of national education systems. Theoretical articles and books, curriculum units and supplements, articles for and against, conference proceedings, speeches, letters, meeting minutes have been drafted, published, shared and/or rejected over the years. Now, in the era of economic globalization, climate change, mass migrations, post-9/11 geopolitics, and other global or international phenomena, new educational writers, writings, and organizations are appearing. The Global and International Education Archive (GIEA) is the worldwide database where researchers, educators and students alike can search for materials, old and new, to support their research, teaching, and learning.
