Indiana is home to over one thousand businesses with foreign investment from nearly forty different countries. Indiana exports in 2022 were valued at $45.2 billion, the 13th largest in the United States. Students and employers benefit from educational  preparation that allows graduates to participate in a wide variety of employment opportunities.

This workshop for Indiana Career & Technical Education teachers will explore the process of internationalizing curriculum to align with K-12 Academic Standards, Employability Skills Standards, Work Based Learning Connections, and Next Level Programs of Study. Heather Singmaster (Digital Promise), Christi McBride (Hoosier Hills Career Center) and other educators will present classroom resources and strategies. Employer perspectives will be shared by a panel of local business leaders.

Teachers will learn how to teach globally through Global Literacy Invitations, an approach that integrates literacy with other curriculum areas. The Global Literacy Invitation (GLI) was created in 2016 at the Indiana University School of Education by Senior Lecturer Leana McClain. Indiana teachers have found GLIs to be a successful teaching strategy for internationalizing their elementary curriculum in a creative and meaningful way.

• Part 1 Summer Institute — Five in-person sessions from June 5th-9th, from 9:00 am to 2:15 pm EST.
• Part 2 Virtual Share Fair — One 4 hour virtual event to share GLIs on Decemeber 2nd. 

Participants will Recieve: 

• Receive about 15 globally themed children’s books upon full completion of project. 
• Receive a certificate with 35 professional growth points upon completion of the project. 
• Receive $300 stipend for full participation in the Summer Institute. 
• Lodging and travel stipend available on first come, first served basis if coming from more than 35 miles.

Through a focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, participants will further expand how today’s pressing global challenges are experienced in local communities around the world. This Institute is a 2.0 version or a more advanced version of an earlier introductory institute on using the SDGs in K-12 settings. Teachers will both build and share knowledge and skills to infuse their classrooms with global content and perspectives, fostering student-led, project-based, solutions-driven, standards-aligned teaching and learning.

This hybrid workshop for Indiana Career & Technical Education teachers will explore the meaning of global competencies and their alignment with K-12 curriculum, Employability Skills Standards, Work Based Learning Connections, and Next Level Programs of Study. Resources and strategies that adapt well to classroom use will be shared. A business panel discussion will provide employer perspectives and on-site tour opportunities.

Teachers will have the opportunity to develop a classroom lesson plan. This workshop is supported by Indiana University's federally designated National Resource Centers and is organized in collaboration with the Asia Society and Hoosier Hills Career Center.

Learning about the world is an effort to educate our students on how the global interacts with the local. It is our duty, as educators, to engage in understanding and living globally to connect students with global phenomena and promote an understanding of interconnectedness. Funded by federal Title VI grants, the Principals’ Academy aims to enhance principals’ and central office administrators’ global competence so that they can create global learning opportunities for their teachers and students. The workshop is FREE but limited numbers.

This workshop is supported by Indiana University's federally designated National Resource Centers and is organized in collaboration with the Asia Society.

Global Competencies for Indiana Career and Technical Education Programs

Participants are expected to attend both live workshop sessions and complete two educational modules on their own. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop a lesson plan. Institute for K-8 Educators: The UN Sustainable Development Goals

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, this institute will be offered in two parts. Through this webinar, teachers will learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how they can be used to create meaningful and high-impact global learning opportunities. Teachers will build knowledge and skills to infuse their classrooms with global content and perspectives, fostering student-led, project-based, and solutions-driven teaching and learning.

Many teachers felt alone in this work and lacked guidance on best practices; however, teachers around the world have been teaching in a range of crises for many years and we can learn from their experiences.

In this webinar series, K–12 educators in the United States heard from those who have been providing education in crisis for years. Webinar 3: Supporting Students in a Crisis - Psychosocial Support and Social Emotional Learning (July 31, 2020, 10 am - 12 pm)

The stress of the COVID-19 pandemic combined with extensive time out of school has negatively impacted the mental health and well-being of many children. In this webinar, participants will learn about the value of psychosocial support and social emotional learning (PSS-SEL) in a crisis situation and hear the experiences of educators who have provided PSS-SEL in a range of emergency settings. Preparing Students for the Global Workforce: Global Competencies for Career and Technical Education Programs

Professional Development for K-12 Teachers was offered this summer through free virtual workshops. The workshops taught the meaning of global competencies, and how to align them with Indiana's K-12 curriculum and Employability Skills Standards.  Educational resources and strategies that easily adapt to classroom use were shared and discussed. Teachers have the opportunity to initiate a lesson plan. It was designed for educators in Indiana’s Career and Technical Education programs. This opportunity was provided by Indiana University's federally designated National Resource Centers.

Option I: Virtual Workshop in partnership with Hoosier Hills Career Center

June 17th-18th, 2020. 9 am-12:30 pm. Free, with the possibility to receive a stipend. 

Option II: Virtual Workshop in partnership with McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology

July 1st, 2020. Full-Day. Free, with the possibility to receive a stipend.

Participants received:

• $50 Stipend for participation and feedback. 

This was a free two-day-long workshop led by Heather Singmaster, Director in the Center for Global Education at the Asia Society, where she oversees the Global Cities Education Network and works on integrating global competence into Career Technical Education (CTE) programs.

This workshop covered the topics of Career and Technical Education and Global Employability skills, and was designed to assist educators with integrating global competencies into Employability Skills, CTE programs, and other disciplinary units (such as Economics and Social Studies). There were a mix of activities including an introduction to global learning and global skillsets, instructional resources, module development, dialogue, group work, and curriculum development. This workshop provided participants with a $200 stipend, professional growth points, lunch, and mileage reimbursement.

The workshop for language educators covered What Does It Mean to be Proficient? (what the various levels of proficiency look like and what it takes to reach those levels) and Two by Two: Moving Along the Proficiency Continuum (examples of good pair activities and how to effectively implement them). Pair work is one of the most effective strategies in giving students the speaking ability they want.  In addition to being a highly effective engagement strategy, it allows students to practice in a less exposed setting and provides them many more opportunities to speak than in a teacher-dominated environment. Attendees experienced several pair activities, and were directed to resources that can be accessed for use in their own classrooms.

This joint teacher workshop, "K-6 Internationalization Summer Institute: Fostering Global Readiness in our Students", featured experts from across IU’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies & School of Education. Objectives included infusing global perspectives into curricula that align with Indiana academic standards and learning about networks and resources that promote global learning. Partipants received training packets, classroom materials, and access to online resources.

The Global Center, with campus partners in the School of Education, offered a day-long workshop with follow-up check-ins on comprehensive internationalization to Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, Indiana.  The workshop was customized to address the unique concerns at Memorial and meet the needs of the interdisciplinary teachers.
