Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship 2023 Recipients
By Isaiah Green
Each year, the Center for the Study of Global Change (CGC) awards several Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. These prestigious awards are designed to support students in their learning about less-taught languages and cultures, with a focus on their connections to global and international issues. Throughout this academic year, we were thrilled to award these fellowships to a group of graduate and undergraduate students studying a variety of languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Persian. The impact of these fellowships on their career development is significant. With this support, these students can enhance their knowledge and experience within their various areas of study as they pursue work for various US government agencies or NGOs that address critical global issues. For instance, one of our past FLAS winners, Kyle Tucker, was named the Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship for 2023 and has been working with the Nuclear Threat Initiative to develop safety measures that encourage peace and aid in ending the production of nuclear weaponry this fall. He also recieved the Marshall Scholarship for 2024 which will pay for a his graduate study at any University in the United Kingdom as he continues his career in international work. Congratulations to these students once again, and we wish all of them well in their future endeavors in global and international work!
