Relaunching the Muslim Voices Project

This year saw two advances for the IU Muslim Voices project, spearheaded by the Center for the Study of Global Change. First, we were honored to receive a grant from the IU Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council to support the project “Voices of Muslim Women in Global Perspective”. Funds from this grant will be used to support the work of a graduate student and to launch a virtual lecture series this upcoming Spring (more on that in the “Coming in 2021” section).

Second, we are pleased to announce the soft launch of the Muslim Voices website here: https://muslimvoices.indiana.edu/. The new site features links to previous podcasts (now available with transcriptions) and videos, our growing social media accounts, and a relaunched blog platform. We invite everyone to consider contributing to our platforms by writing a public facing blogpost on new emerging research or personal experiences and to consider contributing to our Instagram account through an Instagram “takeover”.

Voices and Visions: Islam and Muslims from a Global Perspective

We also held two Muslim Voices events in 2020. In January, we hosted the “Public Scholarship Workshop: Learn How to Translate Research into Public Knowledge”, with an emphasis on blog writing and choosing visual images. Thanks to Professor Jennifer Midberry, formerly at the IU Media School, and Lana Ruck, PhD Candidate in Anthropology and Editor-at-Large of ScIU for leading the workshop.

Conversations in Science at Indiana University

We were also pleased to host Mehdi El-Ghaly, a Moroccan storyteller and performance artist, for a Twitter livestream storytelling event during Ramadan. Listeners heard about Moroccan traditions and tales straight from Marrakech.
